Hebrews 12:22-29 (KJV)
- But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly
Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
- To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to
God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
- And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that
speaketh better things than that of Abel.
- See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that
spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that
speaketh from heaven:
- Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I
shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
- And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are
shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
- Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we
may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
- For our God is a consuming fire.
The One Thing God Requires: Trust . . .His
Judgment
Hebrews 12:22-29
It is an axiom of Scripture that our God is a God of judgment. There is no sin that escapes
His sight, no sinner that escapes His sentence. As the Creator of all, He is by nature the Judge of
all. The mercy of God would be meaningless with no comprehension of the condemnation of
God. From this text we can learn to trust God's judgment in three areas.
- Trust His judgment of sin . . . "God, the judge of all" (v.23).
Webster's defines a judge as "one who declares the law." God has written into the heart of
every man knowledge of His law (we call this conscience). In addition He has revealed
His laws clearly to man. Any transgression of His law is sin (I John 3:4).
- Sinners have no excuse . . . Paul tells us this in Romans 1:18-
20: "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men . . . because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for
God hath showed it unto them . . . so that they are without excuse."
- Sinners have no escape . . . The writer is very clear in our text
Hebrews 12:25: "If they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much
more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven."
- Sin cannot be covered . . . "He brings to light the hidden things" (I
Corinthians 4:5).
- Sin cannot be compared . . . "Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and
yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all" (James 2:10).
- Sin cannot be cured . . . "If we say we have no sin, we deceive" (I
John 1:8).
- Trust His judgment of the Saviour . . . "Jesus, the mediator of the new
covenant" (v.24).
A mediator comes between two parties who are at variance with each other. He is the "middle"
man. So Christ is the mediator between God and man. Sin has set man at a distance from God
and Christ has come to reconcile. How does Christ accomplish it?
- Christ lived a sinless life . . . born of a virgin (no Adamic sinful nature),
sinless in life (without guile), fully obedient to the will of His Father. In him is no sin" (I
John 3:5). He deserves all the blessings of God while we deserve God's
wrath.
- Christ died a sinners death . . . God judged Christ. He cursed Him. The
Father turned His back on His Son. There was a separation between the Father and Son.
"Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for use"
(Galatians 3:13). "Even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us" (I Corinthians 5:7).
(Also see: Romans 3:24-25; Romans 5:6; Romans 8:3; I Corinthians 15:3; Galatians 1:4,
Colossians 1:20).
- Christ rose a victorious Savior . . . "See that ye refuse not him that
speaketh" (v.25).
- Trust His judgment at the Second Coming . . . "Ye once more I shake . .
." (v.26).
The writer of Hebrews quotes a passage from Haggai 2:6 which promises a day when the Lord
will come to shake not only the earth but also heaven in a day of judgment.
- Believers sins are covered . . . "by the righteousness of God" (II
Corinthians 5:21).
- Believers sins are cast away . . . like the scapegoat in old Israel -- gone
forever. You have been given a foundation (Jesus Christ) that cannot be shaken! Trust Him!
