Luke 1:34-37 (KJV)
- Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
- And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the
power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of
thee shall be called the Son of God.
- And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is
the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
- For with God nothing shall be impossible.
The One Thing God Requires: Trust . . .His Ability
Luke 1:34-37
The themes of our study has been "without faith (trust) it is impossible to please
God." The word impossible in Hebrews is in a verbal tense which means "impossible at
all!" Our text teaches us it means to trust the ability of God in our world and in our
lives.
- Trust His ability to do everything . . . "with God nothing is impossible . .
."
In our text Elizabeth is called a barren woman, yet she becomes pregnant. Mary is a woman
"who has not known a man" (a virgin) yet she conceives the Son of God.
- God's power is inherent to His nature . . .
"Great is our Lord and of great power" (Psalm 147:5). Theologians call God omnipotent
which means "all powerful." Men have power that they inherit, but God alone has power that is
inherent. All power we possess comes from Him.
- God's power is only limited by His will . . .
"The will of creatures may be, and is more extensive than their power: and their power more
contracted and shortened than their will: but not God" Charnock..
"He hath done whatsoever he pleased. He commanded and it was done." (Psalm 140:5).
- God's power reigns over all things . . .
- God has power over storms: "He giveth snow like wool . . . He casteth
ice; He causeth His wind to blow and waters to flow . . ." (Psalm 147:15).
- God has power over sinners . . . "I have withheld thee from
sinning" (Genesis 15:6).
- God has power over Satan . . . "The Lord rebukes thee Satan"
(Zechariah 3:2). "If God be for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31).
- Trust His ability to know everything . . . "with God nothing is impossible . .
."
The Psalmsit says "God's understanding is infinite: (Psalm 147:5). Theologians call God
omniscient. Omni is the Greek for "all" and science means "knowledge."
- God's knowledge is perfect . . . He knows the past, present and future.
"All things are naked and opened unto the eyes of Him" (Hebrews 4:13). When God
speaks through a prophet regarding the future, the prophecy is true.
- God's knowledge is practical . . . "Does He not see all my ways, and count
all my steps" (Job 31:4). "His eyes are upon all the ways of man . . ." (Job 34:21).
- He knows how much you can bear.
- He knows how to work all things for good.
- He knows what it is you need.
- He knows what you feel.
- God's knowledge is purifying . . . when you think of His knowledge of
you.
"Shall not God search this out . . . he knows the secrets of the heart" (Psalm 44:21).
- Trust His ability to be everywhere . . . "with God nothing is impossible . .
."
Theologians call this attribute of God His omnipresence. God is everywhere at once. No
demon, no angel, not even Satan himself has this ability. "Do I not fill all heaven and earth?
saith the Lord" (Jeremiah 23:24). God is with you at this moment. You do not need to be in
a church building, at the front of a church, in any special place. His presence is with you in the
midst of storms or the calm of life. Trust His ability.
