Jude 14-15 (KJV)
  1. And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,
  2. To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

The Lord Cometh

Jude 14-15

There is heightened interest all over the world on the subject of the end of the world as we approach the end of the millennium. From movies, books, and television shows, we are being inundated with material, mostly fiction regarding the end of days and the judgment upon this world. My tendency is to discount anything that is popular with culture or the professing church in general because it is usually both false and fantastical. However, we can't ignore the clear teaching of Jude regarding the coming of Jesus Christ to execute judgment upon the ungodly.
  1. The First Prophecy of a General Judgment Upon the Ungodly . . . "Enoch prophesied, saying . . ." (v.13).
There is no written record of this prophecy in the Old Testament, though the early Jews used to refer to "the prophecy of Enoch" in their own writings. This likely was a prophecy of Enoch passed down orally from one generation to another. Enoch is called the seventh from Adam to distinguish him from Enoch, Cain's son, the third from Adam.
Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints to execute judgment . . .
    1. This prophecy is a clear revelation . . . "the Lord cometh . . ."
All men have a sense of judgment within their consciences. Felix "trembled" when it was mentioned. The heathen have some sense of it in their religious observances. Sodom and Gomorrah are types of it. Yet if a man will not listen to conscience, reason, or the Spirit, then ask him what he thinks of the Scripture. If he "scoffs" the Scriptures (II Peter 3), then there is no other way of learning but by experience and feeling.
"There may be atheists in the church, but there are none in hell." Thomas Manton
    2. This prophecy is a clear reprimand . . . "Behold, the Lord cometh . . ."
Our actions are the best image and expression of our thoughts. We should always "behold" the day of the Lord. It is not our job to fix the time when He comes, but it is our responsibility live as if it is here today. "Cometh" can be translated "is come." Enoch said, "Look, the Lord is come." What does that mean?
      1. We should live in light of the Lord's coming . . .
To put off the thought of that which will one day assuredly come about is a spice of atheism.
      2. We should never hesitate to share Christ . . . to those whom we love, both with lifestyle and words.
    3. This prophecy is a clear reminder . . . Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints."
      1. This is a reminder that there are people God calls saints . . .
Saints are those clothed with the righteousness of His Son, not with human works or goodness.
      2. This is a reminder that you can't number the people of God . . .
You say "But is says 'ten thousands' of His saints." Yes, but "ten thousands" was the highest number in the language of Jude. Enoch clearly tells us that God has a people "no man can number."
  2. The Final Purpose of a General Judgment Upon the Ungodly . . . "to convince all that are ungodly" (v.14).
There are those who find it difficult to believe in the judgment of God. They have no problem seeing how God can be loving and gracious, but how can God judge sinners and condemn them? I believe the keys to an understanding and reception of the Biblical doctrine of judgment are found in verse fourteen.
    1. The ungodly are condemned . . .
Notice the number of times the word ungodly is used. Four times "ungodly" is used to describe the people who will receive the judgment of God. However, "there is no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1). Either you reject the Redeemer here and receive judgment there, or you receive the Redeemer here and miss judgment there. Ungodly deeds are judged either in Christ or you.
    2. The ungodly are convinced . . .
They are convinced of the absolute foolishness and sinfulness of three things:
      1. Their ungodly deeds . . . they will see the severity of their sin and know it to be sin. As the Scripture states, "Their iniquities shall find them" (Numbers 32:23). ;"The books will be opened" (Revelation 20:12).
      2. Their ungodly desires . . . the difference between a saved man and a lost man is the heart and motive behind one's sin. Wicked men follow the devil's work with all their might. "They do evil with both hands earnestly" (Micah 7:3).
      3. Their ungodly declarations . . . they speak ungodly things against the Lord Jesus Christ. They scoff at the things of God and they will be convinced that what they have said is foolish and regrettable.
    3. The ungodly are cast away . . . into the blackness of darkness forever (v.13). And please notice that they go "speechless" and "self condemned" (Matthew 12). There is no excuse to be found before a holy God.
