Leviticus 25:10 (KJV)
  1. And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.

"It's Jubilee, People!"

Leviticus 25:10

According to Leviticus 25:8-12, at the completion of seven Sabbaths of years (49 years) the trumpet of the jubilee was to be sounded throughout the land on the tenth day of the seventh month (Tisri 10), the great Day of Atonement. This year of Jubilee was preeminently a time of joy, the year of remission or universal pardon. The term or derivation of the word "Jubilee" is related to the Hebrew word jobel, which meant "a ram's horn," an instrument used to call the people to celebrate and rejoice. The year of Jubilee is a great Old Testament type of the incredible blessings flowing from Calvary.

Three things characterized the year of Jubilee:

  1. Remission of all debts held by the people (Leviticus 25:39)
"If one of your countrymen becomes poor and sells himself to you . . . he is to work for you until the year of Jubilee" (Leviticus 25:39-40). Jubilee brings freedom to slaves. If through poverty you lost your inheritance, Jubilee restored it all (Leviticus 25:28). The Gospel Jubilee (the good news of Christ) does the same thing for spiritual Israel.
    1. There is remission of sins . . . "I am sold as a slave to sin" (Romans 7:14).
Christ came to bring "deliverance to the captives" (Luke 4:18).
    2. There is restoration of souls . . . sin by its nature destroys, but the gospel of Jesus Christ (the "balm of Gilead") brings both cleansing and healing. That which sin takes, the Savior restores. Christ is our Jubilee for all people.
  2. Rest for all the people and all the land (Leviticus 25:11)
"Do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines." The people of God had to depend upon the Lord for their very lives during Jubilee. The Gospel Jubilee (the good news of Christ) calls for a man to come to the place of complete rest in the work of God through His Son Jesus Christ. "Come unto me all ye that are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). "Enter ye into my rest" (Hebrews 4:3). Jubilee brings the people of God into a state of heart rest.
  3. Rejoicing for all God had done and all God would do (Leviticus 25:21)
"I will send you such a blessing . . . that the land will yield enough for three years." What is the year of Jubilee? It is nothing short of God's people saying, "We will trust you!" We have been blessed by God throughout the years here at Emmanuel, and we are trusting God to continue to pour out his grace and blessing upon us for years to come. Let us rejoice! Let us be glad! Jubilee continues at Emmanuel, Enid! Jubilee shouts from the mountain, "Liberty, Freedom, Grace, and Rejoicing!"
Emmanuel continues her steady pace toward her year of Jubilee!
